AKAROA BOROUGH RATES

REDUCTION BY JD IN THE £

A reduction of three-farthings in the consolidated general rate will be made by the Akaroa Borough Council this year, with a rate of lOd in the £ on the unimproved value.

The council, at a recent meeting, approved estimates for the spending oi £18.358 in the current year, the major item being £7522 for sealing the unsealed borough streets, of which £7OOO will come by way of a special grant from the National Roads Board. Provision was also made to spend £1950 on repairs to the main wharf, the work to be subsidised by the Marine Department. The chairman of the works committee (Cr. J. D. Smith) was authorised to inquire as to contract prices for excavating for the laying of a new water main.

After ,an unsatisfactory report had been received from the Health Department on a test of a borough water sample, it was decided to cut back trees on both reservoirs.
