LOCOMOTIVES TO COST £700,000

IMPORTATION FROM AUSTRALIA

New Australian-built diesel locomotives to be imported to New Zealand next year will cost the Government nearly £700,000. The Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) said this on his return to Christchurch by air from Australia yesterday afternoon. Ten locomotives, similar to 30 G.M. engines built in North America and now in service on the North Island Main Trunk, will be bought at a cost of between £69,000 and £70,000 each. They also will be used on the Main! Trunk line.

It is hoped to complete the change to diesel operation on the Main Trunk by «J une . 1957,” Mr McAlpine said. , ■ 1425-horsepower locomotives, bmlt in Sydney by the Clyde Engineering Company, will be shipped in two batches, four in March and six in June.
