AMALGAMATION OF COUNTIES
HALSWELL COUNCIL STILL IN FAVOUR
The Paparua County Council realised that “the present lack of stability” was affecting the efficient administration of its district and was anxious that the question of amalgamation should be settled “one way or the other” as soon as possible, the council advised the Halswell County Council yesterday. The Paparua council said that the Hornby and Sockburn county town committees both favoured amalgamation, and the council sought the opinions of the Halswell council.
“We shall have to let this matter stand,” said the chairman (Mr J. McKenzie). “We have had our directions from our ratepayers—favouring the
amalgamation of the three counties—and we can only advise Paparua that we have had no reason to change our views as a council.”
The council decided to advise the Paparua County Council accordingly.
