RAFT VOYAGE TO EUROPE
One Man Abandons Graft HALIFAX. June 20 Jose Martinez, who has been seasick for the last ten days, was taken off the raft L’Egare today by the Federal Fisheries vessel Investigator II bound for St. John’s. Newfoundland. The three remaining French voyagers, who hope to drift to Europe on their crude craft, gave their position to maritime amateur radio operators to-night as 202 miles from Cape Race or 545 miles east of Halifax. L’Egare has moved about 60 miles since Tuesday, the fastest time since it left Halifax on May 24. The sailors also reported that they had only enough food to last another 15 days. They had planned to sunplement their meagre rations with fresh fish. They have caught only one since the voyage started They said they were all well and would continue their trip.
The radio message did not say how sick Martinez was. Earlier reports said his condition was improving but he would leave the 30-foot craft if a passing ship would take him.
