DEATH OF NOTED U.S. EXPLORER
(Rec. 8.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 6.
Mr Hiram Bingham, a former United States Senator, who was also a noted explorer, died here today. He was aged 80.
Mr Bingham discovered Vitcos, the last capital of the ancient Incas in Peru.
He made the first ascent of Mount Coropuma, a 21.700 ft mountain in the Andes, and discovered the ruins of Machu Picchu, site of Inca temples. He was a Republican Senator during the Coolidge Administration in th* 3 1920’5.
