UNIVERSITY MATCH

CANTERBURY BEATS LINCOLN

After holding Canterbury University College to 3-all at half-time, Canterbury Agricultural College was unable to withstand the pressure of countless attacks in the second half and was beaten by 16 points (two goals from tries, a try, and a penalty goal) to 3 (a 4ry) iri a curtain-raiser. to the main game at Lancaster Park yesterday.

The teams are leading in their respective competitions this year, and both play the attractive open style of football. Yesterday however, bright back movements were few, mainly because of the deadly tackling of the backs, who stood flat for most of the 80 minutes.

The forwards were just as evenly matched, but Canterbury College was slightly superior in the tight and lineout play, which allowed its backs many more opportunities. In the Canterbury College forwards J. D. Stewart played his usual hard game, and G. Loveridge, B. Morrison ana A. Chirnside assured B. J. Molloy at halfback an adequate share of the ball from the line-outs. R. Wells and J. Broomfield covered a lot of ground in the loose. W. J; Whineray played right up to the reputation he had built up through rugged, unrelenting play. He was always in the thick of the tight and was a drivr ing • force in the loose. B. D. Cashmore and A. F. Cassie, .two former Manawatu representatives, gave him close support, and R. W. Moffat played well on cover defence and made one great run which nearly ended in a try. X In the, Canterbury College backs, Molloy and Wetfd combined better' than did T. D. Sporle and O. H. Costley. Neither Wood nor Costley could do much against the quick-break side-rankers, but individually both made some good runs. R. B. Land and J. Tapsell pjayed well on the wings for Canterbury College, and before he retired injured, B. M. J. Dineen was a capable full-back. J. Croucher later filled this position with merit. A. M. Pettit was another full-back who did little wrong, and R. G. Duffy, playing at centre three-quarters, handled well and ran strongly. For Canterbury College Wood. Land and Tapsell scored tries, one of which was converted by Croucher and the other by Molloy, who also kicked a penalty goal. Whineray scored a try for Lincoln College. Mr R. G. Condliffe was referee.
