OBITUARY
COLONEL H. E. PILKINGTON
‘The Press’ Special Service WELLINGTON, June 6.
A former Quartermaster-General of the New Zealand Army, Colonel Herbert Edward Pilkington, has died in Wellington, aged 79. Colonel Pilkington joined the New Zealand Artillery as a cadet' in 1896. Commissioned as . a lieutenant two years later, he served in South Africa and was promoted to captain in 1904. Early in the First World War, Colonel Pilkington became AdjutantGeneral at Army Headquarters, before leaving with the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Serving on the staff in England, he was posted to the War Office Ordnance Department as assistant-director of ordnance stores to the sth Army Corps. He Jater became director of ordnance services at New Zealand headquarters in London. Between the wars, Colonel Pilkington was director of ordnance services in Wellington, and was QuartermasterGeneral when he retired in the early 1930'5.
