MOTORIST FINED FOR SPEEDING
TWENTY-FIVE MILE CHASE DESCRIBED (From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE, June 6. A 25-mile chase on the main highway, in which the speed at times was stated to be more than 85 miles an hour, was described in the Waimate Magistrate’s Court by Traffic -Officer E. E. Dunlop, prosecuting Francis Dennis Cantwell, manufacturer, of 37 Kirkwood avenue, Christchurch, on a charge of exceeding 50 miles an hour. Traffic Officer Dunlop said he chased defendant’s car south from Otaio nearly to Glenavy. Fcfr defendant, Mr B. McClelland said his client, a racing driver, was running the car in, and the speed suggested would harm the precision vehicled
Entering a conviction, the Magistrate (Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.) said he did so in the light of confirming evidence given by Robert John Miller, a railway surfaceman. He was satisfied defendant exceeded 50 miles an hour, Mr Lee said. Defendant was fined £5.
