SOUTH AFRICANS’ TOUR
RUGBY FOOTBALL
COMMENT BY TEAM MANAGER “WILL PLAY GAME IN ITS FINEST SPIRIT” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, May 6. Dr. D. H. Craven, manager of the South African Rugbv Union team to tour Australia and New Zealand, said today that, win or lose, the Springboks would do their best to play the game in its finest spirit. “The differences in interpretation of rules we are likeb' to encounter in Australia and New Zealand will puzzle us. but it will be our aim to adapt ourselves to them.” he said. w “We are going to trv to beat our opponents—not the referee. If we lose, it will not be for any reason other than that our opponents were too good for us. “If we are beaten, we shall try to make their victory the delight to them that should accompany such a performance.” Dr. Craven said.
N.S.W. TEAM SELECTION NEXT SATURDAY - (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 7. Nineteen internationals are included in a squad from which State selectors will choose the New South Wales Rugby side to play the Springboks in Sydney on May 19. The selectors will pick the State team hfter next Saturday’s club games. Twelve of the internationals played in the Australian team which defeated the All Blacks in Auckland last year. The New South Wales squad is: Full-backs. R. Phelps. J. Dowse. Wingers, B. Roberts, A. Morton, E. Stapleton. Centres, J. Phipps, J. Potts, H. Barker, S. White. Halves, R. Tooth, A. Summons. C. Burke. B. Cox. Forwards, J. Thornett, N. Hughes, K. Cross, A. Hancock, A. Cameron. D. Meares, D. Emanuel, A. Miller, N. Shehadie, M. Elliott, R. Davidson, J. Brown, and J. Cross. Several of the chosen internationals have been under a cloud because of injuries and it will be touch and go whether they are fit enough to play against the Springboks. Australia will discard its traditional colours for test matches against the Springboks this month. Australia will i n white jerseys with a green and gold embossed coat of arms, black shorts and green and gold socks. As the host country Australia has given up its traditional green jerseys and white shorts because South Africa also plays in green jerseys and white shorts.
Ten South African reporters will accompany the Springbok team, which will arrive in Sydney early on Thursday. The Springboks will train that day and attend an official welcome at night. They will watch a Sydney club match on Saturday in which a number of Australian internationals will appear. T . he Springboks will spend most of their time at the Sydney seaside subrub of Coogee, where the 1946 was 1951 All Blacks also lived during their Australian tours. Coogee residents, who are eager to give the Springboks a warm welcome, will be reluctant to tell the visitors of the Aboriginal meaning of the district’s name. Actually it means “the stench of rotting seaweed.”
BUSY WEEK FOR SOUTH ISLAND SELECTORS
(New Zealand Press Association) T i j ..NELSON, May 7. South Island Rugby selectors are this week combing unions in their territory for material for the South Is J a " d ,J. eam t 0 play the North Island at Wellington on May 26. o A t - A Marslin, chairman of the South Island panel, will have travelled more than 2000 miles before he returns to his home in Central Otago on Saturday. Last Saturday, with the two other South Island selectors, Mr R. R. King (West Coast) and Mr J. G. Rankin (Canterbury), Mr Marslin saw West Coast play Buller at Westport. Today the three selectors attended a trial match in Motueka between possible and probable teams from the Nelson. Marlborough and Golden Bay-Motueka unions.
They left immediately after the match for Christchurch on their way to Dunedin to see Otago nlay Southland on Wednesday. The following day they will see a trial match for the Hanan Shield unions at Timaru.
TRIAL MATCH AT MOTUEKA R. G. BOWERS IN GOOD FORM (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, May 7. R. G. Bowers, who toured the British Isles with Bob Stuart’s All Blacks in 1953-54, could have enhanced his prospects of selection in the New Zealand team to meet the Springboks with a brilliant exhibition in a trial match at Motueka today. Playing at first five-eighths, he gave a delightful display of attacking football, scoring two good tries. Thirtyfour players from the Golden BayMotueka, Nelson and Marlborough unions took part in the trial, which was watched by the three South Island selectors. Mr T. C. Morrison, chairman of the New Zealand selection committee, was also present. Apart from Bowers, the game revealed little else in the way of talent. The Nelson representative. J. W. Bryant, was the pick of the full-backs, while C. Carr (Marlborough) showed promise as a wing three-quarters. J. Black, the young Nelson centre threequarters. performed creditably at second five-eighths. The outstanding forwards were D. Simpson (Nelson) and E. Hansen, the burly Marlborough flanker.
