SHORTAGE OF DECK SEAMEN

SHIPS DELAYED AT AUCKLAND (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 7. The shortage of deck seamen is acute in Auckland, and 18 are needed before five Union Steam Ship Company vessels can leave port. The Waiana, due to sail for South Australia today, is short of two seamen. The Kurow, also due to leave for South Australia today, was held up by the lack of four seamen. The collier Konui cannot return to Westport until she gets three seamen. The Komata is short of five for her expected departure tomorrow for Portland, and a full crew is needed for the Navua, leaving for Tasmania tomorrow to pick up a potato shipment. The Waitaki is due to sail for Tauranga tomorrow, and she is short of four seamen. The company tried all New Zealand ports for deckmen today, but was unsuccessful. Men applied to the ships for jobs today but they were turned away because they were not qualified as seamen and did not belong to the Seamen’s Union. An official said: “It’s no use them -applying unless they belong to the union.”
