DEMOCRATS IN TEXAS

SENATOR JOHNSON IN CONTROL (Rec. 11 p.m.) DALLAS (Texas), May 6. The United States Senate majority leader, Senator Lyndon Johnson, today held control of the Texas Democratic Party by virtue of a victory over the Governor of the State (Mr Allan Shivers) for chairmanship of the State’s delegation to the national Democratic convention. Senator Johnson’s 4-1 victory in yesterday’s precinct conventions, the first step in selecting delegates to the convention, also meant that the Texas delegation this year will be pledged to support the party’s nominee for the presidency of the United States. As delegation chairman in 1952, Mr Shivers refused to support Mr Adlai Stevenson. He backed President Eisenhower and carried the State into the Republican column. Senator Johnson’s victory also gave added impetus to his “favourite son” candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Mr Shivers has said Mr Stevenson is still unacceptable to him as the Democratic presidential candidate.
