Mr Mendes-France Not To Resign
(Rec. 8 p.m.) PARIS, May 6. Mr Mendes-France last night resisted shouted demands from his Radical supporters that he resign from Mr Mollet’s Socialist Government. He said that if the Socialist-Radical coalition was broken now it would be a “disaster for France.” Mr Mendes-France, who is Minister of State, was addressing a meeting of 1200 Radicals celebrating the first anniversary of the Radical Congress at which he took over control of the party machine. He strongly defended the Prime Minister’s handling of the Algerian crisis.
He told Mr Mollet’s critics that the Government’s hands were tied by the opposition which it had encountered in Algeria.
