REGULATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY
PROTEST SUPPORTED BY TECHNICAL COLLEGE The protest of the Seddon Memorial Technical College at the new regulations adopted recently by the Auckland University College council for admittance to the university, was supported at a meeting of the board of managers of the Christchurch Technical College on Friday. The regulations, which will become effective in 1961, are:— (1) An approved course must be' taken with a minimum standard of attainment of 30 per cent, in the School Certificate examination in the approved subjects—English, foreign languages, mathematics or an approved science and a fourth subject which must be in the University Entrance examination subjects list. (2) The University Entrance qualifications must be obtained by accrediting or by examination, and it must include mathematics or a foreign language or a science. The principal of the Christchurch Technical College (Mr D. W. Lyall) said he did not know of any other university college which had adopted the regulations. The proposal was considered a “retrograde step,” and a “ridiculous plan” by members of the board, and it was moved at the meeting that the protest be supported.
