HORNBY CLUB’S RACE WON BY D. HEWER The Hornby Cash Cycling Club’s road race on Saturday was won by the club’s president, D. Hewer, who was having only his sixth start in 10 years. Hewer beat A. Shaw by half a wheel, and R. Kennett was third, half a length behind Shaw. These three made full use of the back wind on the way to the turn, and were never likelv to be caught. R. Shepperd, a limit rider, won bv two minutes a 25-mile handicap race held by the Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club from Sparks road to Motukarara and return on Saturday. Results:— G. AVON CLUB’S 25-MILE TROPHY RACE The Avon Amateur Cycling Club’s 25’Vv. e handicap race on Saturday for the y.B. Trophy was won by T. Kenny, who is having his first season of road racing. J. Smith kept with Kenny until the turn at West Melton, where Kenny went ahead to finish 2min before a bunch of six riders. The bunch jockeyed for positions near the finish, but J. Mugford came from the rear in the last quartcr-mile to beat M Doyle. Doyle took fastest time. Because the trophy was presented for 3 J a f e desi Sned to encourage riders to pedal fast, and use low gears, a gear limit of 75 was set on the race. Results were:— T.
