LOVELOCK RELAY RACE

CROSS-COUNTRY

RUNNING

WIN FOR CANTERBURY COLLEGE FAST TIMES AT DUNEDIN Canterbury University College won the twentieth Lovelock commemoration relay race at the .University oval, Dunedin, oh Saturday. Conducted by the Otago University Harrier Club, this six-man relay race, in which each runner covers 1500 metres, commemorates J. E. Lovelock's win in the 1500 metres at the 1936 Olympic Games. Dr. Lovelock was a member of the Otago University Harrier Club during his stuaent days. On a track that was hard and fast, Canterbury University College gave a fine display of determined and consistent team running to hold off a very strong challenge from Caversham, and record a winning time which clipped almost 25 seconds off the previous record time of 25inin 39sec put up by Caversham last year. Twelve teams competed. Canterbury’ thoroughly deserved its win for in the early stages it was almost 140 yards behind the leader after P. H. Barnett. former New Zealand University mile champion and record holder, lost ground' through pulling a tendon when lying a handy second. Not only did the team retrieve this ground and gain a useful lead, but its last three runners all held their positions against very determined challenges from Caversham. At the end of a fast first 1500 metres stage A. Potts (Celtic United) led by 10 yards from D. Beauchamp (C.U.C.). with N. McDonald (Caversham) 12 yards away third, followed by Leith. North Otago and Otago University. D. Hutton consolidated Celtic-United’s lead on the second stage. In second place Barnett (C.U.C.) lost ground and was passed by Leith and Civil Service before the baton change, but gamely finished his lap, handing over to T. I. Crossen, who had Canterbury’ University College oack in second place at the end of his stage. A. Murray (Otago University) ran into third place with Leith fourth and Caversham, which had lost its initial position, well back fifth. P. R. May ran splendidly for Canterbury University College over the fourth i stage. Starting 120 yards behind the leader, he soon passed the Celtic-United l man. and sent B. W. H. McStay away clear of the field. R. Cain had brought I Caversham up into third place behind Otago University. Giving McStav 220 yards' start, H. Hendry (Caversham), made a fine effort to challenge I. Sim (Otago University) for second place, but was still 60 yards behind at the baton change. P. N. Sidon made a magnificent effort for Caversham to try to catch B. P. Bragg (Canterbury University College) over the last, stage. He had gained 45 yards to be only 15 yards behind at the bell lap. but he could not match a fine last 220 yards burst by Bragg, who finished 20 yards ahead in record time for his team. Both these runners recorded very’ fast times for their stages, Siddon's time of 3min 55sec being a record. Results:— Canterbury University College (D. Beauchamp. P. H. Barnett. T. I. Crossen. P_. R.
