NEW LINER FOR FRANCE
Government Concern At High Cost (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. March 21. France was facing a serious problem in her plans for building a new transAtlantic liner in place of the Normandie, according to Roger Duveau. Under-Secretary of State for the Merchant Naw. says the Paris correspondent of “The Times.” Mr Duveau said French shipyards were asking for £31.000.000 to build the proposed 55,000-ton liner, while the maximum price abroad was about £18.000.000 for such a vessel. No final decision had been taken, but the Government was contemplating the possibility of a smaller vessel of about 35.000 tons. Another possibility was that the Government might decide to wait for further progress in the field of nuclear energy before ordering the new ship.
