YOUTH HOSTEL HUT
PLANS FOR ERECTION SUSPENDED Plans for the construction of a hut at Hilltop by the Canterbury Youth Hostels’ Association have been suspended. Recently -Sir V. H. Montgomery, of Little River, gave the association £lOOO to build a hut named after him in Montgomery Park, near the Summit road. The Wairewa County Council has found that the purk is classed as a scenic reserve, and may not be built on. At the request of the association the council is applying to the Minister of Lands (Mr E. B. Corbett) for an Order-in-Counc’l giving permission for the association to build the hut. When the site for the hut has been fixed, members of the association will build it as soon *s possible. They plan to pre-cut the hostel in Christchurch and transport the parts to the site for assembly. At least six tradesmen will be available for work. The Sunlight League has offered the association the use of a building, formerly shearers’ quarters, on its children's health camo property at Birch Hill. The association has accepted, the offer, and will call the hostel, near Mount Thomas, the Garry Hostel. The league has offered to bear up to £BO of the cost of putting the building in order.
