FATE OF SEAL AT LYTTELTON
MINISTER ASKS FOR REPORT Dennis the Menace, the big elephant seal that was forcibly removed from the inner harbour at Lyttelton last week, is now the subject of a report called for by the Minister of Marine (Mr J. K. McAlpine). Mr McAlpine said in Christchurch last evening that he had asked- the District Inspector of Fisheries (Mr F. Bennington), who personally attended to the seal’s removal, for a full report on the matter. Mr McAlpine said he knew nothing of the circumstances of the removal, nor whether seals were protected. Although Dennis had for months been termed a sea lion, the director of the Dominion Museum (Dr. R. A. Falla) said yesterday that he was “definitely an elephant seal, which are common visitors to Lyttelton.” Dr. Falla said that the lack of fur on Dennis made it impossible for him to be a sea lion.
