DEATH OF MR G. MCLEAN
WELL-KNOWN TRAINER IN SOUTH “The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. March 16. Mr Gilbert (Gib) McLean, who died at Riverton, aged 92. was well-known in southern racing circles. Born in Edinburgh. Mr McLean came with his parents to New Zealand in 1863 and settled in Dunedin. For some time after he left school, he worked with his father in a tailor’s establishment. Like many other boys who lived near Forbury Park in those days, he became interested in racehorses. He trained them until about a year ago. Mr McLean trained many horses at Trentham. Otaki. Dunedin, and Invercargill. For a time he leased Dr. Fullerton’s stables at Invercargill. While there he had as apprentices Finn McKay and the late R. E. McLellan, men who reached the top flight in racing. Some of the best horses he trained were Gold Ring. Wild West. Glenspouse. and Miss Finland. With All Humbug, he won the Riverton Cup. Mr McLean went to Riverton about 35 years ago, and lived there until his death. SCRATCHINGS ISSUED The following scratchings have been issued for meetings today:— Trentham Rimu High-weight: Fossick. Mackaytown Handicap: Envoy. St. Patrick's Handicap: Regal Nib, DynaMembers’ Hack Handicap: Prince Bayanut. Opunake Patiki High-weight Handicap: Gay Student. My Jewel. Borough Stakes: Nerada, Golden Reward. Jade. Alan Good Memorial Hack Handicap: Scarlet Robe. Birchwood High-weight Handicap: Peter Lo (Channel Flight re-enters field).
