N.Z. OFFICER APPOINTED TO UNTSO (New Zealand Pt ess Association) WELLINGTON. March 12. ] A third Nexv Zealand Army Officer, I Captain L. S. Shannon, of Tauranga. < has been appointed to the United i Nations Truce Supervision Organisa- i - tion in Palestine. ; The Acting-Minister of Defence ‘Mr E. H. Halstead) said today that the < ’ appointment came after a request by Major-General Burns, chief of staff of UNTSO, for an increase in the ! strength of the military observer 1 group because of increased tension in the area. 1 The appointment brings the number - of New Zealand Army officers serving t with United Nations military observer k .groups to six. Two officers have • been with UNTSO in Palestine since 5 July, 1954, and three officers are serv- - ing with the United Nations military 3 observer group in Kashmir. - Captain Shannon, who will leave 1 New Zealand today, is a territorial r officer in the Ist Battalion. Hauraki Regiment. He has been granted a 1 short-service regular commission. He - served in Korea with the 16th New Zealand Field Regiment.
