LANCASTER PARK
Sir, —Could you kindly tell me when the first Victory Park Board was formed and how soon afterwards the visiting English Rugby League team of 1920 played two games on Lancaster Park, against Canterbury and New Zealand? Do you know, also, if there were any points of interest concerning the board’s granting the application for the use of the park on those occasions?—Yours, etc., VICTORY PARK. March 1, 1956.
[‘‘The Victory Park Board was created by the Victory Park Act, .1919, and the first meeting was held on January 8, 1920,” says a statement from the board. “An English Rugby League team played two matches on Lancaster Park in August, 1920. Dealing with Rugby football, the act provides that the park shall be available for ‘Rugby football played under the control or with the sanction of the committee for the time being of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union.’ The board granted the use of the park for the League matches mentioned in view of the fact that the Canterbury Rugby Football Union offered no objection.”]
