CHRISTCHURCH MAYORALTY

Sir, —l was interested in your note in Saturday’s issue on possible candidates for the mayoralty. That Mr Macfarlane has been a good Mayor and a worthy representative of the city is admitted even by his opponents, but many feel that he should keep his word and give someone else an opportunity this time. I notice that Miss Howard is mentioned in your report as a possibility. I wonder would the Labour Party have the courage to nominate her. Christchurch has always been the home of political experiment and I believe that the opportunity of electing a woman of the calibre of Miss Howard to the mayoralty would appeal to the electors. Women have repeatedly filled this office with* distinction in overseas countries. Why not in Christchurch—Yours, etc., QUIZ. March 12, 1956.
