HIGHLAND GLEN FAVOURED AT TIMARU MEETING TODAY

TROTTING

Highland Glen, which became the early favourite for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes with a fine run at the New Brighton trials last Monday, will probably be favourite for the Claremont Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s autumn meeting at Washdyke today. Highland Glen will be bracketed with another three-year-old, Royal Triumph, which is raced by the owner-trainer, W. D. Robinson, who is at present campaigning Pointer in New South Wales. Highland Glen trotted his mile and a half at the New Brighton trials in 3min 29 2-ssec. an outstanding effort for a young horse. He could have improved considerably on that time if he had been asked for more speed. If Highland Glen begins as well today as he did at New Brighton, he should win. His bracketed mate, Royal Triumph, is not very solid yet. but looks a likely type of trotter. He is closely related to Royal Mile, winner of the last New Zealand Trotting Stakes. Random’s Pride, which has not raced since he gained a very easy win at Kaikoura in November, was a winner at the New Brighton trials on Monday. The Desmond’s Pride four-year-old has a good style of trotting and if he races up to his best, he should give a good account of himself. Worthy Boy, which has finished second at his last three appearances, will have prospects of being placed again. The Precaution gelding has a fair turn of speed, but in recent races he has not fought on when challenged. If allowed to make his own rules today. he will take catching. With You. which has trotted some fair races this season. Scotch Mist, a winner at Orari, Kaboon and the three-year-olds, Dalmation and Supervise, make most appeal of the others. Chance For Straight Eight Straight Eight is selected to do best of W. R. Butt’s bracket of three in the Wai-iti Handicap, the main sprint race. He will be bracketed with Kingsdown Direct and Te Koi. both of which are engaged earlier in the Timaru Cup. Straight Eight showed to advantage at the New Brighton trials last Monday and, if he races as well again, he will have bright prospects. He has previously shown outstanding form over sprint distances. If started in this race, Kingsdown Direct will take beating. He looks handily placed on 12 yards. Te Koi will also have bright prospects if he reproduces his best North Island form. Macall, which is usually most reliable at the start of his races, should be well suited by the mile and a

quarter journey. The Dillon Hall gelding looks handily placed on the front mark. Golden Marino, which is also engaged earlier in the Timaru Cup, looks capable of making a bold showing over this sprint journey. Con Scott. Fair Annette, Loraine and Mighty Fine are all speedy pacers likely to add interest to an open race. Macklin, a member of R. H. Butterick’s successful team, may leave maiden class in the two-mile Seadown Handicap, in which few of the runners have good form. Macklin was a fair sixth over two miles on the course in January and he is expected to make a bold showing. Delaforce, placed over two miles two starts ago, has a fair turn of speed, but is not reliable. He may be prominent. Norice Scott has shown stamina in her races to date. She was ninth at Orari after losing ground early. She could easily upset calculations. Impressario, Lord Mackworth, Taipo and Trojan make most appeal of the others. Serenelli, which showed good form on the recent Blenheim-Nelson circuit, may add to her record for consistency in the Temuka Handicap, which has drawn a field of improving trotters. The four-year-old Baffelan mare should give a good account of herself from 24 yards. Kilty Lad trotted sound races at Hutt Park last week and from 36 yards he cannot be overlooked. He ’ has good speed and could be placed. 1 Bay Queen failed at Orari recently. ' but before that she had shown fair l form. With a smooth beginning, she i may reach a place. Lillian Dale gave a sound display of trotting at the New Brighton trials and she could surprise if she races as well today. Sure Maggie, Legislate, Quite Con- ; trary and Gay Ti*ne are others expected to race prominently. , The weather has been fine in Timaru this week and the track will be hard and fast.
