WEARING OF CRASH HELMETS
PIONEER MOTOR CLUB’S PROTEST (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 9. A protest against the compulsory wearing of crash helmets by motorcyclists travelling at more than 30 miles an hour was made in a letter from the Pioneer Motor Club read at a meeting of the New Zealand Road Safety Council. The letter added: “We must also emphatically protest against the helmet regulation extending, to passengers of a motor-cycle and side-car combination. The club has found no statistics showing accidents in New Zealand involving a motor-cycle and sidecar.”
The Commissioner of Transport (Mr H. B. Smith) assured the motor cyclists’ representative on the council that the final draft of regulations would not require the compulsory wearing of helmets in sidecars.
