MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FRIDAY (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.) SHIP DESERTION Norman Parry, a seaman (Mr G. S. Brockett E appeared further on a charge of deserting the ship Fremantle Star at Bluff on January 21, having alreadv served one month’s detention. Mr Brockett said that Parry was a British subject. He asked that Parry be released on probation for he had work and accommodation in Timaru. Mr N. H. Buchanan, for the shipping company, said there would be no vacancy in a ship in the near future. The company had no objection to Parry being admitted to probation. The Magistrate released Parry on probation for two years subject to his being placed aboard the first available ship. ON ENCLOSED PREMISES James Patrick O’Shea, aged 58. a labourer, pleaded guilty to being found without lawful excuse, but in circumstances that did not disclose the intention to commit any other offence, on the enclosed premises of Sunderland Bros., Ltd., at 286 Fitzgerald avenue, on March 9. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Sub-Inspector C. H. Reardon said that a constable found O’Shea asleep in a stable at 5.5 a.m. O’Shea said he had permission to be there, but the head baker told the constable that he had not given permission but had told him to get off the premises. Sub-Inspector Reardon said that O’Shea had a substantial list of convictions TRAFFIC OFFENCES The following prosecutions for traffic offences were brought by the police and penalties were imposed as stated:— Using a motor-vehicle without due care and attention: Rex Baxter Blackmore, £2; Neil Clarke Gregory, £3; Bryan Patrick Martin, £5; Neville Charles Britt, £4. Failing to give way: Ronald Ernest Button, £5; Reginald Christopher John Carthy, £3 (no driver's licence, £1); Arei Theodorus Jacobus Lipman. £5; Wilfrid Barry Owen: £5; Win liam Joseph Ward, costs only. Riding unliahted cycle at night: Jean McDonald. £l. Failing to signal when turning.: John Bazley. £3. No warrant of fitness: Allan Graham Boese. 10s: Patrick Joseph Consedine, £1; Patrick Sarsfield Kortegast. £1; Antonins Kuipers, £1; Kenneth Alexander McKenzie, £1; Hugh John McQuaide, £l. Hirer permitting other person to drive rental car: Hendrick Bosma. £2. (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) INDECENT ASSAULT Eric William Clark, aged 29. a city council employee (Mr D. H. Stringer), who had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of indecently assaulting a boy, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
