CADET SHOOTING CONTEST
CHRIST’S COLLEGE WINS VICTORY SHIELD The Victory Shield for the best cadet rifle shooting team in the Southern Military District was presented to the Christ's College cadet corps yesterday by the district commander (Brigadier J. T. Burrows). The shield was won by a team of 10 boys at West Melton last November, when it was in competition for the first time since 1939, the year Southland Bovs' High School won it. Christs College last held the shield in 1907. The metal plaque on the shield is copper fashioned from a portion of Lord Nelson's famous flagship, H.M.S. Victory. The plaque commemorates Nelson's death on October 21, 1835. and was given by the Lords of the Admiralty to the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society 100 years after. The shield is also known as the Canterbury Defence Cadets' trophy. but schools from all over the South Island have competed for it. The trophv was presented for competition by Mr G. G Stead. I Members of the team were as follows: Sergeant R. E. O. Wilson (captain); UnderOfficers M. J. Dudinan. C. J. O H. Tobin. P. .T. S. Cox. W. P. Greenslade; Warrant Officers D. H. Neville. H. P. Cotterill Sergeant A. W. Shand: Able Seaman J. M. de Bueger; Leading Hand B. W. Stokes. The three members of the team still at school—Wilson. Neville, and de Bueger were presented with the trophy by Brigadier Burrows who shook hands with them and them on their success. I
