ORCHARD WORKERS’ WAGES

INCREASES APPROVED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 8. The Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) has announced increases in the wages of orchard workers, retrospective to January 23 this year. An Order-in-Council was gazetted this evening. The new weekly rates, which were agreed upon by representatives of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Industrial Union of Employers and the New Zealand Workers’ Union are, for permanent workers, as follows: Managers, £l2; other male workers (21 and over), £lO 7s 6d; female workers, £7 ss; youths, 15-16, £3 7s 6d; 16-17, £3 15s; 17-18. £4 12s 6d; 18-19, £5 12s 6d; 19-20, £6 10s; 20-21, £B. Casual rates as fixed by the 1955 order are increased by amounts varying between Id and 3id an hour. The order also contains an amendment making it obligatory for all workers employed within the scope of the order to become members of the New Zealand Workers’ Union instead of only workers employed for a period exceeding two weeks.
