ADDINGTON MARKET

Large Offering Of Old Ewes

RATES FIRM FOR BEST QUALITY

More ewes than at any stage this season were yarded at Addington market yesterday. Selling went on for seven and threequarter hours. For best quality two-tooth and older ewes values held to late rates, but no doubt due to the continued dry weather other classes were harder to sell and were cheaper. Lambs were generally not of very high quality and consequently were difficult to dispose of, except in the case of one or two better-class pens. Many Chatham Islands Romneys were in the offering, and were popular with buyers. The yarding totalled 28.813 head compared with 24.464 head last week. It comprised 7002 lambs, including about 700 ewe lambs, 5753 two-tooth ewes, 14,326 older ewes, and 1732 wethers. The two-tooth ewe entry was about twice the size of that of last week. A large proportion of the offering of lambs was backward and light. Very few top quality lambs were on offer. The total yarding was slightly below last week’s figure, but this did not appear to increase competition to any extent. The best price of the day was 56s 6d for a small but select pen of 24 Southdowns from H. H. Deans (Darfield). Romney wether lambs sold up to 435.

Romneys were again in demand in the two-tooth section and the best of these sold fully up to late rates to a shade better. Apart from the best of the offering however, sales were not so easy to make and values tended lower. The best R° mr »eys sold to £5 for 68 from Alford Station out of a line of 436 which ranged from £4 upwards. This was slightly in advance of last week's best rates. Good ewes sold at 70s to 80s, medium at 58s to 68s, and ordinary and plain at 25s to 495. There were a good many sheep in this latter category. Among the older ewes best quality sold well up to recent rates, but others were cheaper, and inferior and backward types were not wanted. There were quite a number of passings among the aged ewes in poor condition. Five-vear Romneys from F. Q. Lanauze (Chatham Islands) realised up to 565. and a pen of four-year halfbreds well-woolled made up to 655, The best of the ewes sold at 50s to 565, good 39s to 48s, and plain and culls at 10s to 245. The offering of wethers, although not large, was greater than for some weeks and included several pens of good forward sheep which met with a fair demand at prices up to 60s for part of lines from A. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 7. Entries were larger in most sections at today’s Burnside sale, and as a result prices showed a definite easing. Fat cattle prices generally were easier by fully £2 a head, and in places up to £3 more than last week. Cows showed little alteration on values. Export buyers were noV operating for fat lambs, and bidding was limited to the trade. After their requirements had been filled, the market collapsed, a number of pens being passed. Wether prices could be quoted at 6s to 7s below last week’s. Ewes sold fairly well in the early part of the sale, but these also fell away in values. ANNUAL GERALDINE EWE FAIR (From Our Own Reporter) GERALDINE, March 7. There was a yarding of 14,000 two-tooth ewes and ewe lambs from the Geraldine district at the annual ewe fair at Geraldine today, Romney and Romney-cross breeds predominating in the yarding. For the most part the sheep came forward in good condition, and although there was only a moderate attendance of farmers, competition was well maintained. Taken all round, the sale was a most satisfactory one, although there were erratic spells when moderate and inferior sheep were offered. Most vendors met the market and there was almost a complete clearance. Top price in the ewe lamb section was obtained by Mr L. A. Coulter (Geraldine) for a nice pen of Romneys. These made 77s 6d. Mr A. K. Nolan topped the twotooth ewe sections at 935. Values were:— Romney and Romney-cross ewe lambs, best 71s to 77s 6d, good 62s to 70s, medium 48s to 595, inferior 30s to 425; Romney and Romney-cross two-tooth ewes, best 84s to 935, good 73s to 81s, medium 55s to 675, inferior 35s to 445.
