ASHBURTON RAM FAIR

TOP PRICE OF 120 GUINEAS

CORRIEDALES SELL WELL Record prices for stud and flock rams at an Ashburton fair was a feature of the annual ram fair of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association held at the Ashburton Show Grounds yesterday. The top price was 120gns for a onePrattley (Orari), sold by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency. It was a well set up sheep, typical of the breed, and was purchased by G. H. Burrows (Geraldine). Another record was set in flock rams, also with a Southdown, which was sold on behalf of F. P. Cookson (Eiffelton) by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., to J. H. Patterson (Amberley) for lOOgns. The ram was a particularly fine type, well shaped, and well woolled. All the rams came, through the exceptionally dry summer in surprisingly good condition, and they were well presented for sale.

Chief interest at the fair was in breeds for fat lamb production, and for this reason the attention of buyers was directed mainly on Southdowns, which were in short supply. Stud rams always represent a relatively small section of the Ashburton fair. Of this year’s total of 27 sluds, only five Southdowns and six Border Leicesters were sold. The sale of Southdown flock rams, which totalled 223. was followed by a large section of buyers. Bidding was brisk at the opening, when the first pen made 31gns. and prices firmed considerably as the sale progressed. A feature of this section was the Longbeach entry, which sold at prices ranging from 37gns to 52gns. Border Leicesters met with a good demana, and prices, which were from 15 to 26Jgns, hardened towards the end of the section. Ryelands attracted considerable interest, with competition for good-quality sheep. S. W. Galletly (Carew) received top price for the fifth year in succession. The demand for Corriedales and Romneys was very slight, a large number of pens being passed in. Prices for some of the best lines were good, but manypens made little more than the reserve price. The top price in the Corriedale section was 20gns for a ram of R. H. Branch (Methven). Top price in the Romney section was 45gns for a ram of J. Brown (Ashburton). There was a large attendance at the sale. The entry of 1131, the smallest for about 12 years, was 806 below that of last year’s fair. Representative sales, all rams being oneshear, were as follows:
