SALE OF RAILWAY VEHICLES
TENDERS CALLED FOR OLD CARRIAGES Twenty-six old railway carriages and vans in various parts of Canterbury and Marlborough have been offered for sale by tender by the Railways Department. Tenders have been called on the basis of “as is, where is.’’ Fourteen of the carriages are at the Addington workshops, live at Mount Somers, four at Blenheim, and three at Picton. A Railways Department official at Addington said yesterday that, although it was many years since they had been used on the track, the carriages were all in fairly good order. They had been condemned by the department, and their disposal had been ordered. Many of the vehicles offered are the old type-A carriages, about 35ft to 40ft long, some with compartments. The oldest was built in 1890, and most were built between 1890 and 1900. The department has disposed of some of its old stock in the past, when carriages have been in demand for use as beach baches, shooting huts, or tool sheds for builders.
