OPONONI’S PET DOLPHIN
LEGAL PROTECTION TO BE GIVEN (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 4. Opononi’s dolphin will soon have the full protection of the law. Any person attempting to harm it in any way will then be liable to prosecution. The Minister of Marine (Mr J. K. McAlpine) said that he had signed the necessary authority which set in train the drafting of regulations to give the dolphin the fullest protection possible. It is expected that the measure will come before the Executive Council for approval when it next meets on Wednesday. It is likely that the Order-in-Council will be gazetted on Thursday evening, and come into force immediately. Because there may be difficulty in distinguishing the Opononi dolphin from the other dolphins or porpoises, or identifying it if it leaves the area and reappears in subsequent years, the regulations are expected to cover every dolphin which may enter the Hokianga harbour. It is believed the regulations will be drawn up under the authority given by three acts of Parliament, including the Fisheries Act, which was not in force when regulations were gazetted to protect the celebrated Pelorus Jack early this century.
