PACIFIC SCOUT JAMBOREE
AUCKLAND CHOSEN AS SITE VISIT OF 8000 BOYS IN 1959 (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 4. The next boy scouts’ pan-Pacifie jamboree is to be held at Auckland early in January. 1959. About 8000 boys from Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries are expected tc; attend. It will be the largest youth gathering yet held in New Zealand. The executive of the New Zealand Boy Scouts’ Association decided on Saturday to hold the jamboree al Auckland to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the scout movement in the Dominion. An invitation has been sent to the Chief Scout of the British Commonwealth. Lord Rowallan, to attend. The site will be Cornwall Park, a 335-acre, well wooded area on the slopes of One Tree Hill, within four miles of the heart of the city. The Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association has offered the use of its buildings, grounds and stadiums, and these facilities, which are near Cornwall Park, will be used for displays and as the jamboree administration headquarters. The Boy Scout Association’s executive said that Canterbury province was a stronger contender for the honour of holding the jamboree, offering Hagley Park as the site. But the decision went in favour of Auckland because a majority of New Zealand scouts live in the North Island. A Canterbury representative on the executive, Mr A. Lilly, congratulated Auckland on its selection, and offered the full support and co-operation of his province.
