OUTSTANDING DISPLAY OF SHEEP AT ROTHERHAM SHOW

The reputation of the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show for a notable display of sheep was further enhanced at Rotherham on Saturday. After so dry a season it was natural that there should be some dryness in the wool of some of the exhibits; but it was obvious that the season had not defeated the ingenuity of the farmers of the district. Judge after judge expressed surprise and pleasure at the excellent quality and condition of the sheep. The judge of the South Suffolks. Mr G. S. Campbell, of Rakaia, for instance, found the quality of the sheep in his classes so uniformly high that he had to take almost every sheep out of its pen before he could come to a decision. Among his sheep he could find little evidence of the drought that has burned up the hills and flats of the district. “They have been well looked after,” he said.

In the South Suffolks the day was another triumph for the sheep of H. H. Davies, who took all the championship awards and was placed first in every class. The Merino judge, Mr J. W. B. Stevenson, of Upcot station, Marlborough. and the judge of Corriedale ewes. Mr D. S. Ross, of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, also confirmed that in view of the season the sheep were an excellent lot. It was not only in quality and condtion that the show was outstanding. With a few exceptions the seven breeds for which there were classes attracted a sufficient number of entries to make the show in each well worthwhile. Mr G. Low. of Highbank. who judged the Southdowns, was for instance gratified at the numbers of sheep in the Southdown classes. Altogether 464 sheep were entered in the sheep classes and hurdles had to be used as pens to accommodate them all. In the big Corriedale section there were so many important names in the Corriedale world among exhibitors

J that to win a place at Rotherham was as much an honour as at any show in the country. Here the president of the association. Mr D. S. Johns, had a day out. taking all the championship and reserve titles. His sheep won eight first places, four seconds, five thirds and three fourths. Merino Honours D. L. Rutherford headed the field tn. ; the Merino classes with both champion- , ships to his credit. Mr Stevenson said i that the ram was a big, well-proportioned! : sheep carrying a true medium combing i j wool, very even throughout, with a good; ; bold head. The ewe champion, also a'medium comber, was a very good bodied : sheep, well proportioned with a good tvpe I of wool.

Mr R. Waddy. of Blenheim, gave the ! main championship awards in the haifj bred section to the well-known exhibitor. A. J. W. Inkson. Southdown honours I were shared between G. L. Johns and A. I D. Wyllie. ; In the produce shed a display of cut flowers by D. R. Smith was described as outstanding by the judge. Mr J. Watiing. A feature of the exhibition of vegetables was the collection shown by Robert Smith. This display was outstanding for quality and arrangement, said the judge. Mr J. Glazebrook, of Canterbury Agricultural College. For the large attendance of spectators j —gate takings improved from £9O last year to almost £l27—enjoyment of the day was mcreased by the excellent facilities on the ground. Entries for this year’s show at 2793 were close to last year’s record figure and were considered very satisfactory in an abnormal season.
