WINGATUI TRACK WORK

SILVER KING RUNS IMPRESSIVELY “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, March 2. A sound trial by Silver King, a candidate for the £3OOO Thompson Handicap on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting was a feature of track

work at Wingatui this morning. Ridden by E. G. Low, of Riccarton, the Royal Chief horse made light of his task, and impressed by the manner in which he ran out the distance to finish strongly after a fast pace had been set throughout. Silver King ran the first two furlongs in 24 3-ssec, and the last three furlongs in 38sec, to record Imin 14 2-ssec for six furlongs on the course proper, next to the rails. The track was hard.

Silver King has not been favoured in drawing four from the outside in a field of 30 runners.

Ark Royal is not included in the field for the North Island Challenge Stakes, but he is being kept in steady work. If he makes the trip to Trentham for the second day of the meeting for the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, he will round off his preparation in the open mile event at. the race trials at Wingatui on March 10. He sprinted half a mile on the plough this morning, and was not extended to run the distance in 54sec, the first furlong in 13sec. Kelbra (B. J. Anderton) did not impress in his trial over five furlongs on the course proper in company with Mulberry (E. G. Low) in Imin 5 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 23 3-ssec. Kelbra was sore when he pulled up, and is likely to miss his engagement in the Lowburn Hack Handicap at Cromwell. B. J. Anderton has now accepted a ride on Royal Lover, which will probably race in this event in preference to the Cromwell Champion Hack. Gallant Peter (E. Lowry) recorded a smart sprint in company with Abbot’s Choice (G. A. Campbell). They finished in line at the end of half a mile in 509 2-ssec, the first furlong in 12 3-ssec, but Gallant Peter, a candidate for the highweight event at Motukarara. was more impressive than his companion, which will race in the President’s Handicap, the second leg of the double at Cromwell. Gallant Peter gained an early lead, but was steadied and was giving Abbot's Choice two lengths’ start at the home turn. He soon passed the Master Hotspur gelding in a strong finish. These times were equalled by Blue Count (L. W. Hare), and the two-year-old Nugleam (E. Lowry), which were clear of Masefield (G. A. Campbell). Chief View (R. Fraser) covered the same ground in 52 2-ssec. the first furlong in 13sec. On the Plough Silence (A. I. Powell) ran six furlongs on the plough in Imin 22 2-ssec. He was not asked for a serious effort until he started the last three furlongs, and the Timanova gelding came home strongly in 40 2-ssec.

Delarmo (A. R. B. Lord) was not hurried over three furlongs in 42sec. A similar task was allotted to West End' (L. W. Hare), which worked more freely on the easy going. Royal Pal (E. G. Low) and Lucky Dewar (G. A. Campbell) were together over five furlongs in Imin 8 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 27sec. Ultra (E. G. Low) ran the first furlong in 14sec, and completed half a mile in 56 2-ssec. Some Bounder and Milling Bay, which are owned by Mr J. M. Samson, of Dunedin, accompanied A. E. Didham’s horses to where they have joined A. J. Williams’s team. They will race in the high-weight event on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's meeting before being offered for sale nt Trentham with the rest of Mr Samson's horses. Both horses have shown good form over hurdles, and will be missed from H. A. Anderton’s team of jumpers. Some Bounder has been out of a place only once in his seven starts this season. He won at the Eastern Southland and Otago Hunt meetings. He finished second to Lovelock on the first day of the recent Wingatui meeting when making a fresn start. Milling Bay won over hurdles on the second day of the Southland January meeting, and has been placed twice this season in high-weight events.
