Control
(Rec. 11 p.m.) _ . . KUALA LUMPUR. March 1
Tengku Abdul Rahman, Chief Minister of Malaya, today assumed the Ministry of Internal Defence and Security after a meeting of Malay State rulers. He called on all the people of Malaya to help him in the anti-Communist struggle. The Tengku will in future be in control of anti-Communist operations as chairman of the Emergency Operations Council. In his message he said: “I heartily thank all members of the security forces —those who come from overseas and those whose homes are in Malaya —for their gallant and successful efforts in preventing militant communism from imposing its will on the people of the Federation. “I have complete confidence in you and know that you will continue to give all your best in this armed struggle. I shall not spare myself in the cause and will do my utmost to seek the fullest co-operation of the people of Malaya in order to defeat the Communist terrorism and to restore peace to our country as quickly as possible.” A Government statement issued after the meeting of State rulers said they approved the agreement signed in London which promises Malaya independence on August 31. 1957, if possible. The statement said that recommendations for the formation of a constitutional commission were also approved by the rulers.
