COMBINED CLUBS’ MEETING

KEEN RACING AT ENGLISH PARK

Well-fought-out finishes marked the weekly meeting of the combined cycling clubs held at English Park last evening. Particularly was this the case in the fivemile scratch race. B. Woodgate jumped to the lead coming into the straight to win by a narrow margin from J. Williams, to win the Althea Fitzgerald Memorial Cup.

The main race of the programme was the eight-lap handicap for the Hope Gibbons challenge race, and this was won by B. Woodgate. The second heat of this race was won in 4min 25sec, at one stage the riders being reluctant to set the pace, but there was no holding back in the final, which was ridden in 4min 9 2-ssec.

C. Henderson. Canterbury champion in the one mile pursuit race, successfully withstood a challenge from R. Lucas (Hornby). Henderson rode strongly and gained on Lucas throughout the race. He did not look like losing. His time was 2min 12sec.

In the one-lap challenge race, however, Lucas was successful in defeating C. Ferguson. After a prolonged battle of wits. Lucas' jumped away from Ferguson to win easily. In the race to decide next week's challenger, M. Hertnon defeated V. Bond. Results: — CASH EVENTS
