ACCOUNTANCY EXAMINATIONS

Sir.—l read in the newspaper that the university has been discussing Accountancy 111. I have a friend who has now sat this subject for the third time and failed. Last year only 31 out of approximately 120, passed. Either the marks are scaled down each year to allow a certain percentage to pass, or students are not instructed correctly for this examination. Some students who just missed in 1954 obtained much lower marks in 1955. even after an extra year’s hard study. Examiners do not appear to have any idea of the time taken to solve certain problems, and no account is taken of the strain under which students sit examinations. Students do not attend lectures and spend hours studying for fun; and if there are too many accountants, why don’t the authorities say so. The students could then take up other courses.—Yours, etc.. INTERESTED STUDENT. February 9, 1956. [“The policy of the University in these matters is not to comment upon anonymous correspondence.” said the Registrar of the University of New Zealand (Mr J. F. McKenzie). “If the correspondent cares to write to me under his own name and from his home address I can, I think, correct some of the incorrect suggestions which he makes in his letter. For obvious reasons, I cannot discuss with him the marks of an un-named friend. If the complaints are really made on behalf of the friend, it might be better if the friend himself communicated with me.”]
