BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN
SEAT RETAINED BY CONSERVATIVES
(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) LEEDS, February 11. The Government held the seat in the Parliamentary by-election at Leeds. Sir Keith Joseph (Conservative) received 14,081 votes—sB69 more than Mr H. Waterman (Labour). The by-election was caused by the elevation to the peerage recently of Mr Osbert Peake, a former Minister of Pensions. In the 1955 General Election Mr Peake beat his Labour opponent by Only 39 per cent, of the electorate voted yesterday, compared with 73.09 at the General Election.
