FAITH HEALER DEPARTS

AUSTRALIANS “LOUTS AND HOOLIGANS”

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec 11 p.m.) SYDNEY. Februarv 12 The American “hot gospeller,” Oral Roberts, left Sydney on Saturday sullen and silent. He folded his huge cathedral tent in Yarra Park yesterday after mob violence, and abandoned the rest of his faith-healing campaign in Australia.

Mr Roberts fled from newspaper, men at Mascot Airport, saying: “I don’t want anything to do with you.” His manager, the Rev. M. Dewees, fired a farewell blast at the Australian press and people. The press, he said, was "scandalous. unfair, lying and biased.” and the people of Sydney and Melbourne “louts and hooligans.” Mr Dewees said: “We closed our meetings because of mob rioting. Lowclass creatures were incited to riot and break us up by a vicious press. It is low-down and filthy.”

He said the people of Australia were “simple and faithless,” but claimed that thousands of soul were saved at Sydney and Melbourne missions. Asked how many souls, Mr Dewees replied: “We don’t claim miracles.” The mission collected £6OOO in Sydney and £2OOO in Melbourne, which would remain in Australia, Mr Dewees said.
