Advisory Director Of World-Wide Soap Business Is 6ft 7in Tall

WELLINGTON, February 2. Mr A. D. Bonham Carter, a director of the giant Unilever organisation, is at present visiting New Zealand. He is 6ft 7in tall. Mr Bonham Carter—“l’ve never been able to make up my mind if there should be a hpyhen, but I think not” — spends four or five months each year travelling round the world. This created special problems, he said in Wellington today. “The world was not made for men my size,” he added. But he takes things philosophically, and bends under doorways automatically. “After all, I’ve been this height since I was 16,” he explained.

Mr Bonham Carter’s main task is advising on staff problems, with particular emphasis on management. He said he was a great believer in “bringing men with ability on early.” “There is always room at the top, and age should not interfere with picking the right man for the job.” he said. “However, the lessons of experience should- always be appreciated.” He spends a great deal of time in Asian countries, mainly India, Pakistan. Burma. Indonesia, Siam, and the Philippines. He believed Western business interests could work in friendship with the spirit of nationalism in those countries, he said. The Unilever organisation in those countries was run entirely by nationals. His own job was purely advisory.
