SUPERANNUITANTS

Sir. —To refer to superannuitants who obtain further employment on retiring as "retreads” and allege that they are a double burden on the people of New Zealand is absolute “piffle.” This assertion was a slur on that class of the community. Because of the labour shortage—Government departments included —someone must be found to maintain the economy of the country. Because of compulsory retirement after 40 years’ service to the country, on two-thirds of their salary, and the increasing cost of living, they are forced to accept employment to balance the difference on their actual retiring salaries. A number of reputable firms and government departments today are only too thankful to use the services of these “retreads,” with their experience and stability as their background. No mention has been made of the employment of married women, bringing the second income into the home.—Yours, etc., LJ». January 26, 1956.
