AUSTRALIA’S GOODWILL MISSION
Sir, —The goodwill mission from Australia at present in New Zealand wants to retain the friendliest relations with New’ Zealand. This seems to w r ork one way only—from Australia to New’ Zealand—and only for Australia’s benefit. Australia has a wheat surplus and it suits Australia very well to get rid of as much as possible; but should Australia take something back in return? We had a potato surplus last season, and although Australia was very short of potatoes, practically no potatoes were sent over, the reason given being that they might introduce the Colorado beetle, a pest that does not even exist here. Last season we had a surplus of onions. Australia bought her supplies from Egypt because they were cheaper. We. too, are all for friendly relations with our sister Dominion, but think it could be a bit more reciprocal.—Yours, etc., MUTUAL BENEFIT. January 26. 1956.
