World Record Swim Planned

Arrangements have been completed in Taupo for Miss Margaret Sweeney, the first person to swim the full length of Lake Taupo (last January) to attempt to beat Miss Bell’s world record of 32 miles made on Lake Ontario, Canada. Miss Sweeney hopes to do 40 miles on a surveyed course between Taupo beach and a point near Mission Bay on the eastern side of the lake. She expects to have to swim continuously for 24 hours and will start on the evening of January 28, accompanied by a radio-equipped launch, a nurse and two rowing boats.
