GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS CHARLES WILSON

Mr and Mrs Charles Wilson, of North road, Kaiapoi, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on February 3 with a family reunion at the home of their daughter, Mrs Alan Savage, Christchurch, who will celebrate her silver wedding shortly. Mr and Mrs Wilson came to Canterbury from England by the Corinthic in 1906, and have spent most of their life in New Zealand at Kaiapoi. In the 1920’5, when the Waimakariri river flooded their home in Akaroa street, the family lived for a fortnight at the residence of Dr. Ralph Winterbourne’s parents, Kaiapoi. When they returned to their home, silt was more than six inches deep on the floor, and coke braziers had to be kept burning in the rooms to dry them out. The walls of the rooms had to be repapered when they were dry. Mr Wilson’s father was a teacher of swimming in England, and among his pupils was the uncle of Mr George Finney (Christchurch), who was champion swimmer of England in 1880 and 1890.

Of Mr and Mrs Wilson’s five children, four are living. They are Mr George Wilson, Mrs Alan Savage (Christchurch), Mrs Selwyn Holland (Kaiapoi), Mrs Francis Foley (Auckland). Miss Mildred Wilson, who was a nurse at the Mater Hospital, Auckland, died some years ago. Mr and Mrs Wilson have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
