AERIAL SURVEY OF FORESTS

SMALL FIRE SPOTTED AT WAIPARA

Fire destroyed from 15 to 20 acres of young and mature pine trees at the mouth of the Waipara river yesterday. The senior forest ranger in Canterbury (Mr C. O. Bridgeman) spotted the fire from a chartered Air Work (N.Z.), Ltd. aircraft piloted by Mr John Brazier.

The fire was still burning strongly late yesterday afternoon, but had burned only over an area of 40 acres including grass and scrub. Mr Bridgeman reported the fire to Kowai county fire officer (Mr J. E. Tinnock) and offered him forestry firefighting service assistance if required. Mr Bridgeman said an aerial fire reconnaisance over all forests in Canterbury yesterday showed that there were no fires in main forest areas.
