LONDON WOOL SALES

CROSSBREDS IN FIRM DEMAND

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, January 20. New Zealand greasy crossbreds were up to Id per lb in the grease cheaper, but sold strongly on this basis when the London wool sales were resumed. In a joint' report, the Committee of London Wool Brokers and the London Agency of the New Zealand Wool Commission state that 10,731 bales were offered, including 6081 from New Zealand. A steady tone prevailed. Once again the Home trade was the main buyer, but improvement in competition from the Continent was well maintained and substantial quantities were taken for France and Belgium, mainly in the finer qualities of fleece and skirtings. Greasy crossbreds comprised nearly 5000 bales of New Zealand offerings. Hoggets predominated, although a certain weight of ewe wool was also available. Style was generally good or average to good. A slight decline was common to all the qualities at the start of the day’s selling, but it quickened appreciably when heavy Gisborne shipments came forward in the final cataldgue. At that stage prices were very firm, and there was practically a full clearance. Some exceptionally high prices were paid for small weight scoured Merinos from Marlborough, the best being 112 d Scoured crossbreds continued to sell strongly, and slipes. which were in «hort. supply, again attracted very lively bidding, with prices for all grades moving against the buyer.
