PAHIATUA CLUB

ANNEXE WINS CUP (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, January 8. The Pahiatua Racing Club held the first day of its meeting at Woodville on Saturday in overcast weather. Rain during the day tended to make the track yielding, and it was very greasy in many places. Annexe appreciated the conditions when she won the Pahiatua Cup comfortably from the Melbourne Cup winner, Toparoa, which recorded a satisfactory Wellington Cup trial. Another favoured Wellington Cup candidate. Finito, ran poorly and finished second to last. A Woodville hack, Beau Song, won the second leg of the double narrowly but well from an outsider, Golden Splendour. The double paid £l3 16s 6d for £l. The totalisator handled £55,920. After the Pahiatua Cup, the ownertrainer of Finito, P. S. McColl, and the jockey. J. Harris, were questioned about the running of this horse. Harris said Finito. after being unable to cope with the shifting going on the first turn, raced better and was able to improve his position when taken out to the firmer going along the back straight. At the three and a half furlong turn, Finito was again uncertain on the footing. He was tried with the whip at the turn, but would not respond. McColl said his horse had never raced well on greasy tracks. Finito was inspected in the birdcage. He was blowing badly. The explanations were accepted.
