CHRISTCHURCH MAN WINS TITLE (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, January 8. Roger W. H. Luscombc. of 53 Matf South road, Upper Riccarton. w» awarded the title of “Mr Caroline Bay,” after the final parade of nine contenders in the sound shell, Timaru. on Saturday evening. The first prize was £l5. Mr Luscombe, who is married, is an employee of Motorways New Zealand, Lw Christchurch. He plays table tenna and is lock forward in the Menvalt second grade Rugby team. He is a boxer with experience m Australia, where he fought several bouts in and around Brisbane. Mr Luscombe was persuaded te enter the contest —his first—by hu wife. He was presented with Uw championship ribbon by Mrs L. T Green, wife of the president of the Caroline Bay Association. The contest, which was organised by the association, attracted 48 entries With the exception of three competitors who burlesqued throughout the preliminary parade, all other contestants took the competition seriously an® displayed muscles and torso to the best advantage before large crowd!. The judges were Senior-Sergeant J. Wilson and Sergeant F. G. Heyward. Wives Were Responsible Second prize of £ 10 was awarded w R. Bennett, a 27-year-old slaughterman, of Pareora. His wife was responsible for his entry also. AlthouP reluctant to appear at first he confessed at the conclusion of the judgini that it had been “lots of fun.”
