NAVAL ORDNANCE DIRECTOR
APPOINTMENT OF N.Z. OFFICER “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. January 6. Captain R. E. Washbourn. D. 5.0., 0.8. E., R.N.. has been appointed to the Admiralty as Director of Naval Ordnance. A New Zealander, member of a Nelson family, he entered the Royal Navy in 1928 and was gunnery officer of the cruiser Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate, was executive officer of the Bellona when she was commissioned in the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1946.
In 1948 Captain Washbourn was appointed commander superintendent of the Devonport naval dockyard and in 1950 became Deputy-Director. Naval Ordnance, at the Admiralty. For the last three years he has commanded H.M.S. Manxman, the 40-knot minelayer famous for its exploits during the Second World War in the Mediterranean.
