CARNATION SHOW

South Island Society’s

Results

ENTRIES EXCEED THOSE OF LAST YEAR '

Carnations and numerous other flowers and shrubs filled the Durham Street Art Gallery with a blaze of colour yesterday, when the ninth annual show of the South Island (N.Z.) Carnation Society opened. Carnations from pufe white to bright red were arranged round the walls of the gallery, which provided visitors with a welcome refuge from the intense heat. Although the recent hot weather had so advanced the growth of the carnations* that most of the blooms exhibited were from side shoots, the standard of entries was very high. The number of entries—436—was also higher than last year. A perpetual, Melville Blush, entered by T. S. Brown, and J. Hitchings’s border, Great Heart, were judged the best blooms in the show. Other flowers entered included gladioli, Iceland poppies, hydrangeas, and several kinds of daisies. In the middle of the main gallery was a large cluster of potted shrubs. The show will remain open today. Results were:— Premier Blooms Premier border: J. Hitchings’s Great Heart. Premier perpetual: T. S. Brown’s Melville Blush. Best in Class.—Self: E.
